Fans of the new movie about 21 Savage might have to wait a little longer.
While on the Club Shay Shay podcast with Shannon Sharpe this week, the 31-year-old British rapper admitted that his life story was more like a pitch for another future project.
“No, that was a parody,” Savage said, referring to a movie in which Donald Glover played the “Rich Flex” singer.
This month, the singer of “A Lot” put out the trailer for American Dream: The 21 Savage Story. In the sneak peek, fans saw the 40-year-old Atlanta actor play the hip hop star, complete with face tattoos and extra hair. Caleb McLaughlin from Stranger Things, Gail Bean, Druski, Jabari Banks, Chad Lindberg, Victoria Pedretti, Young Mazino, and Natasha Lyonne were some of the other people who were in the movie. It was supposed to come out on Independence Day 2024, and “music inspired by the film” would be released on January 12.
But the trailer was actually for 21 Savage’s record American Dream, which is his first solo album since 2018’s I Am > I Was.
His smooth moves are shown off in the “Good Good” music video with 21 Savage and Summer Walker.Fans thought Glover and McLaughlin, 22, would play the Grammy winner at different points in his life. Banks, 25, from Bel-Air played Metro Boomin, a music artist who has worked with Savage for a long time. The fake biography showed important parts of Savage’s life, like when he had to deal with bullies in school. It also showed the controversial time he was arrested by ICE and held in an immigration detention center for 10 days in 2019 because his visa had expired in 2006. This was because he and his mother moved to the U.S. from the U.K. when he was a kid.
As of October 2023, he was a “lawful permanent resident,” which meant he could legally move outside of the U.S. At the time, his lawyer gave a statement that was obtained by PEOPLE: “She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph has followed all immigration laws since he was first detained by ICE.” His case in immigration court is now over, and he is now a legal permanent resident of the United States who can move anywhere in the world.
And 21 Savage has shown his creative side before with his biopic trailer for his new record, though it did get him in trouble with Condé Nast, a media company.
In November 2022, the brand sued both him and Drake because they were said to have used a fake Vogue magazine cover to market their EP Her Loss.In the Southern District of New York lawsuit, it was said that the “widespread promotional campaign” for their record was “built entirely” on Vogue’s trademarks, since the pictures seemed to show the rappers on a December issue of the magazine next to each other, but the issue had been doctored.
“None of it has been authorized by Condé Nast,” the complaint said, and it said that fake copies of the magazine were being passed around big cities in North America.
“Vogue magazine and its Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour have had no involvement in Her Loss or its promotion, and have not endorsed it in any way,” it said.
What the company also said was that the comments and pictures were used by the media without permission, which caused “confusion.”
