Yesterday, someone broke into Wiz Khalifa’s X account. Hackers took over his account and used it to spread fake money called “$WIZ” to his 35.7 million followers.
This fake coin got a lot of attention right away and was worth $3.4 million as soon as it came out. The value dropped to less than $28,000 in less than an hour, though, as people sold their coins.Hackers wrote on the post that Khalifa was “working with my team to drop $WIZ for all crypto fans.” A lot of people in the cryptocurrency world were scared by this false information.
However, ZachXBT, a blockchain investigator on X, told people not to buy the coin because on October 29, the same hacker took over Andy Ayrey’s account. A earlier report said that the attackers used it to sell fake tokens and got about $1.5 million from their scam. Two major wallets bought over 155 million WIZ tokens for $19,100 and then sold them for about $160,000 profit after Khalifa’s account was hacked.
No one knows for sure how Khalifa’s account was hacked yet. But it could be linked to a method called SIM swapping. This is how hackers get someone else’s phone number, which lets them change passwords and get into accounts.
The hackers used the same way to promote a token called Infinite Backrooms (IB) in Ayrey’s case. This made its value jump to $25 million, but they quickly sold all of their tokens.
It’s still not clear if Khalifa has taken back control of his account, but the posts about the fake coin have been taken down.
